YS! has a very simple, one-paned design with handy autofill (configurable in the menu), MG, on the other had is a complicated jumble. The recipe adding interface, arguably the most important part, is where I noticed the greatest difference. Most of these things I will never use, and may even consider as bloatage but its always nice to know that I can plan my wines in advance. They have a full-screen (or large) view, ratings, difficulty, pictures, shopping and wine lists, etc. ![]() MacGourmet: 7/10 – Good, but feels a little cluttered and rough.īoth of these applications have all of the things you would expect from a recipe keeper. YummySoup!: 8/10 – Despite that stupid seal this is a very good interface. If MG did that I wouldn’t mind because I like their icon. I appreciate that they let you change the default recipe image but it still lurks around. My main (and really, only) issue with the YS! interface is that damn seal thing. In YS! there is a “browse by image” option that is rather Cover Flow-esque. One thing I like about MacGourmet is the ability to choose different layout styles for the recipes (akin to message views in Adium). ![]() Overall, the YS! interface seems more polished and modern. The story follows Hercules as he discovers that he is no ordinary man, but the son of the Greek God of the sky and thunder and king of all gods and men. Directed by Ron Clements and John Musker – the team behind The Little Mermaid and Aladdin – Hercules gave audiences a zany, irreverent comedic take on the coming-of-age story of the son of Zeus with dazzling animation and knock-out music. As a result, Genuine Fractals did a great job on keeping edges sharp, preventing lines from getting jagged, and keeping curved lines smooth. ![]() When you enlarge the image, the surface area of each polygon is enlarged, but not their edges. You can think of it as a collection of polygons. Genuine Fractals works by transforming the image data into a vector representation that is independent from resolution (hence “fractal”). I believe it was the best upsizing app for a decade. Prior to trying Topaz Gigapixel AI, I had settled on Genuine Fractals, which was renamed Perfect Resize and then ON1 Resize after its acquisition by onOne Software. There are a number of third-party apps for resizing. Here is the 100% pixel view of a Transamerica Pyramid crop with 4 times upsizing in Photoshop: That is a problem because edges contribute most to the perception of sharpness. That makes the edge more gradual, therefore it doesn’t appear as sharp. If an edge transition takes place over, let say 3 pixels, in the image resulting from a double enlargement, that same edge transition takes place over 6 pixels regardless of the interpolation method used. Resizing by interpolation works roughly as follows: the pixels are spread out, and then an algorithm is used to fill in the spaces in between. If you want to try it, one of the more popular apps implementing it is the free IrfanView. No single method always gives the best results – Adobe would have dropped others! Unfortunately, Photoshop is not offering Lanczos resampling which may often be the best interpolation method. I have found the differences to be quite minor, with “Bicubic smoother” generally, but not always, the best. Some of them are labeled “enlargement” or “reduction” so you know which ones are appropriate for the task. When you open Photoshop’s Image Size window, there are now no less than 8 choices of resizing methods under the pulldown menu next to “Resample”. If you send an image with low resolution to a printer, the printer driver applies its own upsizing, which may be inferior to app-based upsizing and leaves you without control of the process and the output sharpening – my Epson 9800 does best when fed with native resolution files (360 ppi). On the other hand, upsizing of images files is necessary for making large prints if they are to support close distance viewing. Upsizing images is almost never necessary if they are to be displayed online, or even used in magazines or books.īy the way, that was the coolest book cover: the publisher created a half-inch deep 3D cut-out from the horizontal version of the photograph, which worked really well with this scene because the telephoto had collapsed the scenes into slices of depths. The San Francisco Bay is not a top sailing spot for nothing. ![]() I’ve since returned several times to the same spot with better gear, but never observed again the glassy water that created the reflection of the bridge. I photographed it in January 2004 with a 70-200mm lens and a 1.4x teleconverter on a newly bought Canon EOS Digital Rebel, resulting in a focal length equivalent of 450mm for the vertical image. This is because creating such an alignment of the city skyline with the bridge required a quite distant and un-intuitive viewpoint near the Pt Bonita Lighthouse, more than 2.5 miles away from the bridge. The photographs look straightforward enough, but if you look around the Internet, you won’t see them replicated often for such an iconic subject. In this post, the third and last in a series devoted to the Topaz suite of AI-based tools, I examine Topaz Gigapixel AI upsizing capabilities and limits using a pair of images of the Golden Gate Bridge. Even with such a basic task, there is much to be gained by using appropriate apps. If you are making prints, sooner or later you’ll have to upsize the image file. Even the templates that are listed as free in the interface end up with a watermark when they're printed, and we had a difficult time even figuring out how users are supposed to pay for templates if they want to. Overall, we think that ArcSoft Print Creations is a good choice for users who like to have fun with their photos, but those who are expecting free templates are bound to be disappointed. The program comes with an HTML Help file that does an adequate job of explaining its functions. None of the program's templates are exactly groundbreaking in terms of design, but for the most part they are attractive and professional-looking. The Funhouse options are especially interesting these allow users to insert their own faces onto animals, cartoons, and holiday-themed images. There are a lot of options to choose from: greeting cards, posters, scrapbook pages, and more. When users choose to create a new project, a screen opens allowing them to choose what kind of project they want. The home screen allows users to select whether they want to create a new project, open an existing project, or order photo gifts. The program's interface is attractive and intuitive. Unfortunately, although the program itself is free, most of the templates it offers must be paid for if users want to print them without a watermark. ![]() ArcSoft Print Creations is one of these, combining multiple design tools into one application. Numerous applications exist to help users create professional-looking projects with very little know-how. It's too bad that the Image Zone product hasn't been carried forward to the newer Windows platforms - I still keep an old XP computer around just for using Image Zone.In recent years it's become very easy to create custom greeting cards, calendars, brochures, photo books, and more all from the comfort of home. So, bottom line, I very easily wind up with a smaller file size and the original picture size, and the photos are perfect for uploading to an online album. But the best thing about Image Zone is that there is a setting that allows me to keep the original picture size - so I'm not looking at a smaller picture on the screen after I've cut the quality. This greatly reduces file size, however the decrease in quality is not noticeable when viewing the photos on a computer screen. To save space, I edit the photos using Image Zone, and typically save them at 70, 80, or 90 % quality, depending on the original file size. But most times I just want to upload vacation pictures into online albums, however the size of the image files would make for lengthy upload times and the images would take up a significant amount of space. I shoot pictures at the max pixel setting, in case I ever want to print a photo enlargement.
